In an astounding move the developers have announced that they will be rolling back the flash version of the site and returning the HTML version of the site. Also, announced was the start of a regular monthly blog post and corrections to the problems of slowdowns and disappearing units that previously plagued the site before Flash was implemented. Darkbee has renounced his previous statements and rededicated himself to making it into the top 15 in the shortest time possible.

All in all this big day for WeeWar!

• Announcing WeeWar Times 2010 Map Contest (WeeWarTimes.com)

The WeeWar Times is happy to announce something new – a map making contest!  The contest will begin with the publishing of this post and will end on January 31st-ish.  I will close the contest to new entries sometime on the February 1st with a comment on this post that will serve as the official end of the contest.

The Prize?  1 year of WeeWar Pro to the account of your choice!

The Rules:

- 2 Player map

- Balanced

- Maps must be new creations for this contest

- No special rules (like turn off hovercraft)

- Able to be completed in a reasonable amount of time – 30 turns is a good number to think about

- Map must have WeeWar Times in the title: work it into the title, stick it off to the end after a dash, whatever just get it in there somehow

- Entries are to be posted as a comment on this post

- Finalists will be chosen by WeeWar Times writers and presented to the WeeWar Community for a vote to determine the winner via a poll on the forum, voting will be open for a week before the winner is announced

The purpose of this exercise (other than to promote the site a little) is to give us another 1 vs 1 tournament map.   I lean towards a mix of air, land, and sea, but that’s not to say a creative map not having all those units couldn’t win.

Enter as many times as you like and change things up as often as you like until the end of the contest.  I encourage comments from the community, just please keep it threaded to the entry in question and keep things civil.  I reserve the right to alter the rules and moderate comments as I see fit.

Weewar servers are down, comments from the recent blog post about the server change indicate that this is unexpected and the devs are looking into it.

Images and API connections are not resolving although test.weewar.com still seems to be available.

I decided to play around with php coding today and wrote a little bot checker to see what bots have been active within the past seven days and give their online status. For now this data will appear on the right-hand side of every page, I may move it to it’s own page in the future. I’m glad to see some of the bots are still active, I know some programmers have wanted an API upgrade. I hope you find this useful and if you have an opinion on if this should remain a sidebar widget or get it’s own page please leave me a comment and let me know!

The recent site upgrades have slimmed down the code and databases, paving the way for future upgrades. Unfortunately the changes broke many of the GreaseMonkey scripts that enhance the game for us. WeeWarrior Katakana has spent the week since the recent upgrades doing some hacking for us, and is proud to announce that the WeeWar Suite is now up and running. The banker script can no longer work since the game history file has been removed but here’s what Katakana had to say about what is working (quoted from the forums)

I have one script that is the Weewar Suite, borrowed and modified from all others out there. It provides turning off the email notification, an instant end turn as well as the safe 5 second turn, and finally the AutoRepair. However, I will say that it is not 100% reliable in that it will generate an error from the Ajax and you will have to refresh your page. Not quite sure how to fix that since it seems to be a timing issue when the weewar server is slow to respond.

I also have a quick script that I threw together that works on the headquarters/games page and will identify each game as to whether it is Rated or Unrated. I found I needed that to easily decide which game to abandon if I must.
